Who needs one

Who Needs a Criminal Record Check?

A criminal record check for employment is the most common reason, but it is the requesting organization that decides which check is acceptable.

Know the limits of Level 1 and Level 2 checks

  • It is not sufficient for positions working with children or vulnerable persons.
  • It may not satisfy regulated professions or immigration processes.
  • Employment applications

Many employers ask for a criminal record check as part of a job offer or hiring process.

  • Independent contractors

Clients may ask contractors and freelancers for a recent check before engagement.

  • Professional screening

Some organizations request a check as part of general professional or volunteer screening.

  • Employer onboarding

Hiring teams can invite candidates to complete a check during onboarding.

  • Other approved screening purposes

Other lawful purposes where the requesting organization accepts a Level 1 or Level 2 check.

For businesses

Criminal Record Checks for Your Hiring Team

Invite candidates, manage screening requests and keep billing in one place, while candidates stay in control of their own results.

Results are never visible to an employer just because it paid. The candidate must authorize disclosure after viewing their own result.

FAQs

Common questions

Short answers to what applicants ask most. Our help centre covers the rest.

Our support team replies by email.

Is your service operated by the government?

No. Ontario Criminal Record Check is a private online service. We are not a government department, police service or the RCMP, and we are not affiliated with or endorsed by any government.

What type of check am I ordering?

You choose your check in the first step of the application: a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC, Level 2) or a Criminal Record Check (Level 1).

A CRJMC includes everything in a Level 1 check plus outstanding charges and warrants, judicial orders and certain discharges. Neither check is a Vulnerable Sector Check or a fingerprint-based certified check. Before you buy, confirm with your employer or the requesting organization which check they need.

How long does processing take?

Most checks are completed typically within 15 minutes after your identity has been successfully verified.

Some checks take longer. Reasons include additional review by the screening provider, a possible match that cannot be confirmed by name and date of birth alone (which may require fingerprint verification), or delays at the provider or record sources. You can follow progress from your account at any time.

Will my employer accept the result?

It depends on the requesting organization. Each employer or organization decides which type of check it accepts and from which providers. Please confirm with them before you order. We cannot guarantee that any particular organization will accept the result.

How will I access my results?

Your result is available only through your secure account. We never send results by email. We email you a notification when your result is ready, and you sign in to view it.

Can I receive a refund?

If your application has not yet been submitted to our screening provider, you can request a full refund.

After submission, the fee is generally non-refundable, except where we cannot complete the check because of our error or a failure by the provider. The full details are in our Refund Policy.
